Blog Comment Links, Have They Lost Their Value? Well Let’s Experiment.

Blog Commenting Links

Blog Commenting Links

When it comes to blog commenting many experts will tell you that it is of little value SEO wise or link building wise as Google and other search engines have devalued these links as spam.

Now given that Google themselves don’t completely know how their algorithm works who are these experts to tell us that blog commenting is of no value? Let’s play fair, if these experts have proved by building links solely from blog commenting that they have no effect on SERPs then maybe we should heed their cry.

As of yet I have seen no proof that blog comment links do not help with SERP’s in fact I have seen quite the opposite. But let us take for a moment the fact that I for one as a professional link builder have never just built blog comment links, ah! Well, there you go say’s the critic, that’s why you don’t know, but have they carried out this test themselves?

It is for this reason that I propose to experiment over the next 2 months to see if in fact just blog comments can in fact work to increase a website’s SERP’s. Now, if this experiment is going to be fair we will need to test websites which only have blog comment links built to them, also websites which have no links built to them, websites which have other types of links built to them and finally some which have other types of links and blog comment links built to them.

So in my experiment there will be 4 groups of websites;

1)      No links built.

2)      Only blog comment links built.

3)      Only other links built.

4)      Other links and blog comment links built.

By having these four groups I should be able to see if in fact blog comment links have a relation to the website’s SERP’s. If it is the case that blog commenting links have no relation to SERP’s then group 3 and 4 should see the highest SERP’s movement. If group 4 or 2 get higher SERP’s than 3 and 1 or group 4 get the highest positions in SERP’s, then this will prove that blog comments do in fact help with SERP’s.

I realise there are other variables and so I shall be attempting to eliminate as many of these as possible with the criteria below. If you feel there are ways in which I can do this better please fell free to tell me.

1) I shall be using DIY (Home improvement), quality blogs which relate to the website’s theme. I shall also be posting relevant content in my comments which will relate to the post. (Key words)

2) I shall use 3 websites in each all 4 groups, all the same age, with around the same content and with no current links pointing at them.

3) I shall check all positions on Google.co.uk, yahoo.co.uk, bing.co.uk for the websites url and 2 key words which I would like them to rank for. I shall use Google Adwords to find key words which are as similar as possible in competition (this competition cannot be known for sure but by using Adwords I am at least helping to keep the experiment as fair as possible).

4) I shall also build all of the links at the same time to keep the results as fair as possible.

If you would like to follow this experiment please add a link to this post from your own website and then email me ewan@naturallinkbuilding.co.uk to be kept updated of all the results. I shall also disclose to those who give a link the url’s of all the 12 websites in the experiment. If not I shall be giving the details of the results when completed.

What does the internet hold for future generations?

Without realising it the other day I started to bang on about just how good the internet is and why in such a repressed society the internet can be a truly free experience, so I thought I would share my thoughts in this post.

Now I myself come from a traditional UK household where I believed all that was spoon fed me in school and through various media forms such as the newspaper, TV and radio. It was not until now, having spent the best part of 3 years working with the internet, that I realise just how valuable the internet is. Let me just give you an example from a very basic level just how sophisticated I’ll lives have become through using the internet.

My friend and I were sat in his air conditioned room and I asked, ‘why is it that although the temperature is as high as 27 degrees in your room  it feels so cold, when I am home in the UK 27 degrees feels more like a furnace?’ Well after about 10 minutes searching the good old web I found my answer, for those of you who are as uneducated as I the answer is humidity air conditioning units extract the water from the air and thus it feels much cooler.

Now the above example clearly shows that there is no excuse for being stupid anymore when and if you have such a marvellous tool as the internet at your finger tips. But even more important than finding out why and how things work the internet has opened up the opportunity to understand how societies work and how traditions have restricted and confined media forms such as newspapers, TV and radio. All of these antiquated means of media our left back at the start of the race when compared with the internet, by using the internet the shroud can be lifted from our eyes. Let’s take another example to see how the internet has worked to change public opinion in recent times.

If we take the Israeli and Palestinian conflict general public opinion in the West as early back as 10 years ago was heavily in favour of the Israelis, why was this? Thanks to the limited forms of media which most people in the West are saturated with the end result is that whatever that media puts forth as the truth is indeed the truth. Now thanks to the many personal blogs and Twitter and Facebook users and other unrestricted online media there is a much more balanced reporting of these events which has ultimately lead to support for the Palestinians. Also worth noting is that the old forms of media such as BBC have had change radically their form and stance of reporting as they know all to well that if they don’t they are sure to drop their ratings. This again is thanks to the Internets ability to make anyone a reporter of news worthy stories.

The internet has already changed my life dramatically, I no longer have a radio or a high-fi and I’m sure before long I won’t have TV either. The internet has made communication between friends, business and even strangers a much easier job. The great opportunities which the internet gives are essential information and information on anything and everything. If you have a passion to speak out about what you love, hate, like or don’t like the internet is there ready and waiting, you have the opportunity to share your thoughts with the world.

What does the internet hold for future generations? Well I believe that it will give future generations the means to really understand how others feel and the opportunity to group together in a much easier way than ever before. Future generations will be able to access all the information they need to truly understand their world and their place in it. I am excited about all that the internet can offer future generations and I believe that we should stand firm in not allowing governments to take control or restrict the freedom which the internet offers. Governments have always been able to restrict the press and media so as to promote their ideologies don’t let them restrict the internet too.

Tell me what you think, do you agree the internet is a great tool or do you think the internet will be the downfall of society as we know it? Looking forward to all your comments both good and bad!

What’s this we here about links from the same c-class ip?

What are c-class ip? Well, put simply c-class ip is the number which is allocated to your website’s hosting. So if you have many links from the same c-class ip it may appear that you are building resources to link to your own website to gain higher positions on search engines. Effectively, manipulating the search engines into believing you have many links from many different websites.

Now it is often said by SEO companies that any more than 1 link on the same c-class is worthless as Google only counts all links from the same c-class as 1, so whether you have 10 or 10,000 they are only worth 1. Well I am here to disagree with this and believe me this is based on experimentation not on ideology.

Now it is important to state at this point that the reason many SEO companies and professionals are so against building links from the same c-class is due to the great misuse of many link farms. What are link farms? Link farms are a whole load of websites which are built by unscrupulous SEO companies and are all hosted on the same c-class ip. Why do they do it? They do it because it is a cheap way of hosting 1000’s of websites which they can then build links from. It is true that in the past link farms use to have a beneficial effect on your websites ranking in Google and other search engines, although of late they have had a devastating effect on many websites with Google throwing many  websites off their index due to massive quantities of links from the same c-class ip.

Having said all the above we have found that it is possible to build more than one link from the same c-class and still get better positions for our clients. In fact we have built up to 20 links from the same c-class and still seen better positions. Here is the difference though: we build from the same c-class but we use different key terms, also we only build the links from good relevant websites.

If you are using websites which relate well to the website you are linking to then it is possible to get much more than many SEO companies and professionals assume. We would wholeheartedly agree that if you build 10 or 10,000 links from web pages which are in no way related to the website you’re linking to then the results are pretty dismal. If however you use web pages which are related to the website a whole different story emerges.

Have you had experience of building links from the same c-class ip, if so please share your experience as we are all here to learn from one another.

Welcome to our new blog ‘Natural Link Building’

Welcome all and thanks for dropping by, we have started this blog in an attempt to get webmasters and SEO and SEM experts and professional discussing the idea of natural link building, but this blog is not solely devoted to natural link building it will be an open blog discussing all things internet.

I have been involved with the internet a relatively short period of time, just 3 years and I am still amazed by how much there is to be learned. Having made the decision to have a website for your business is only the start of what lays ahead, deigning the website, payment gateways, and emails, hosting the website and then promoting the website.

When I started working for an SEO firm I sold SEO and links with no idea what it was I was doing, having left that company 9 months later to set up in business with a very geeky mate, (who knows just about all there is to know regarding computers and the internet) I never thought I’d have learned so much. But here we are 2 years or so down the line and I have to say, ‘what an interesting ride’. They say that learning is much easier to do when you are younger, well for me the opposite is true. I had no interest in learning when I was at school and it wasn’t until I was 27 years old that I went back to education and in 2003 I successfully graduated with a BA Honours degree in Historical and Cultural studies. After completing all this I then went straight back to working as a floor layer, crazy hey? It wasn’t until 3 years later that I decided to go travelling around Asia and ended up staying in Thailand teaching English, the first real job that used the talents I had gain through my degree. Having taught English for 18 months I then went into SEO.

Learning all the different aspects to building websites and making sure their well optimised is one of the greatest feelings I have had. Watching your clients websites rise in the rankings is similar to watching your football team rise in the league, some games you win and some you lose but if overall you succeed it’s all good.

So if you would like to add something to this blog, be it a guest post or just a comment feel free to do so as that’s what it’s all about. If you have funny stories regarding websites you’ve built or SEO campaigns you’ve work on please share them with us.

What are themed links and how do they differ from other links?

First let us establish what links are and why we want them or use them. Prior to search engines links were the only way to get from one website to another. Webmasters would place links on their websites to direct users to other useful resources that they may find interesting. A link is therefore any hyperlink which takes you from one page on the internet to another page.

When search engines first developed they used a number of ways (known as an algorithm) to place various links to websites higher than others, this still continues to this day. How they do this is one of the hottest debated subjects on the internet. If we all knew how Google places various websites number 1 for key terms none of us would be rich as everyone would be doing it. Now the truth is that Google themselves have revealed two of the major ways they place one website higher than another. The first is all to do with content, get good and relevant content on your website which is better than your competitors and this will help you to get higher positions on Google. The next is links, Google themselves admit that they look at the links which are pointing to your website to ascertain link popularity. So, the more links the better hey? No! More links do not equate to better positions it is a well known fact that certain links will in fact lose positions on Google rather than gaining higher positions.

Now when we think of links it is helpful to go back to our university days where we would always refer in the reference to various sources we had used for various points to be made in an essay or dissertation. Also when publishing a book or dissertation you will have further or other useful reading. If you think of links as the referencing of a page on the internet or other useful reading you begin to get the picture of themed links. Themed links are links which are placed on internet pages where either information has been used for the article (page) or further resources can be found which relate to the topic/theme. Google will give far more weight (link juice) to these types of themed links as they are far more relevant than links from internet pages which are not related. So how do you get these themed links, well first write some really good content which others will feel is worth linking to. The next best thing is to get an expert themed link builder to do the job for you as in the long run this will properly save you a huge amount of time which you could use for other skills which you are proficient in. Beware however that there are many people offering link building services which are utterly useless and can cause you to lose positions rather than gain positions on search engines.

Our suggestion for quality themed and natural link building is to view our services at http://www.naturallinkbuilding.co.uk/seo-services.html as we have built up our resources and now offer natural link building which is carried out in just the way Google and other search engines are looking for. We will provide you with in content links which relate specifically to your website and will come from websites which Google regularly index meaning you can achieve top positions for different key terms that your business needs.

What’s the difference between paid for links and a paid for link building service?

Why are we even discussing paid for link and paid for link building services? Well, if you have any interest in getting your website top positions on search engines then you will know that links are one of the major factors when Google decides who goes where. However Google has sent out a warning that paid for links will result in websites getting banned from their listings and the Google police are on the war path. Anyone who believes a website is buying or selling links should immediately report it to Google so they can take the necessary action. Do you detect a note of sarcasm? Good you should do. Having worked in the SEO game for 3 years and more I have seen that 90% of websites which are highly ranked on Google are using many paid links to get there. It is the same rhetoric used by governments to scare the masses into doing what they want while they continue to steal out of your pocket. Google says it will punish websites for using paid for links and in just the same way the government asks you to snitch on your neighbour if their claiming benefit while working Google asks you to snitch on your competitors website if they use paid for links. What a load of tosh! If all of the competing websites snitched on one another 90% of websites would be banned from Google and thus no one would use Google as a search tool anymore!

Now, please don’t get me wrong I am not advocating paid for links as although you are unlikely to get banned you are running the risk of getting banned and any good internet business does not want to fall off Google’s listings. So what is it I am advocating?

First let us ask the question, ‘what is a paid for link?’ Paid for links come in many different forms such as directory submissions, banner ads and anchor text links. Taking them one by one let us first look at the directory submissions, certain directories on the internet will allow you to place a link to your website free of charge while others will charge anything up to £1000 for a detailed submission into their directory. Now the very strange thing about these paid for links is that Google is quite happy for these web directories to charge and make money even if the link is a follow through link (let me say at this point that you can have 2 types of links, a follow and a no-follow the first allows search engines bots to crawl through the link to the next page which helps with rankings, the second does not let them crawl and does not help with rankings). Now whether Google has a vested interest in these directories who knows? However you don’t need to worry about getting kick off Google with these paid for links.

The next paid for link is the banner ad the banner ad has long been used since the dawn of time, well the dawn of the internet marketing game anyway! Google are happy for people to pay other webmasters to advertise on their websites however they do not want people to use this as a means to getting better positions on their search engine. Thus it is that all banner ads need to have a no-follow link otherwise this is seen as cheating in Google’s eyes and will be punish by loss of rankings, although thousands maybe millions of websites are using follow links on banner ads.

The last paid for link are the anchor text links these links are designed specifically to use key words which you want your website to rank well for. These are the most common of all paid for links with webmasters charging upwards of $100 per year for a page rank 2 link on their website. These links can be seen on many websites good and bad and they are the life blood of the internet as 90% of websites use and have these links.

So, to finally get to the question, what’s the difference between paid for links and a paid for link building service? Well the difference is this paid for links are exactly that, you pay a webmaster for a link. There are many good link building services which have built up good resources after years of hard work and Google is quite happy for you to employ a link building service as long as those links aren’t paid for. So, I am therefore advocating that if you are employing the services of a link builder or link building company this is ok so long as the webmasters are not getting paid for specific links or is it??

What do I need to do to get a good SEO campaign going? Get a report before you start.

There are a number of things any good SEO (search engine optimisation) company or expert need to know before offering you an SEO campaign or service or indeed if you are to carry out SEO yourself firstly…

Key words – What are the key words or key terms which are important for your website?

Key word analysis takes time and research it cannot be done in 5 minutes a standard website will have 100 or more key words which are essential to the website, larger websites can have 1000’s of key words.

There are some good seo tools out there which help you to find key words and the competitiveness of key words such as www.semrush.com but this does cost money. If you were to carry out key word research on just a basic website you could spend all day so paying the $25 for a month subscription could equate to a saving in the long run with SEMrush.

Having established the key words you need for your website you are now able to add the quality content which will attract visitors to your website and keep them coming back.

Quality content whether in the form of good pricing or good information regarding your products and services is the most important aspect of your website and no amount of offsite work can compensate for lack of quality content. Any good SEO expert or professional should offer you ways in which quality content can be added to your website to increase SERP’s (search engine results position) and length of stay on the website. I have given a few ideas on how to improve content for e commerce websites here quality content for e commerce websites.

It is worth mentioning at this point that the key words and quality content research can be greatly improved by looking at those competing websites which are ranking well in the search engines. As an SEO expert or professional they will be able to see just what these websites have that you don’t which brings me onto the last point which is back links.

By studying your competitors’ websites you will be able to see what and how many back links they have and where their back links come from. This will give you or your SEO Company a good starting point for getting valuable back links to your website.

Putting together an SEO campaign requires research into the three key areas above key words, quality content and back link research and even with the right SEO tools to save you time I estimate this would take the best part of 3-4 hours for standard size website. So any good SEO expert or company which offers you this as a free service beware as they are properly not giving you the whole picture. I would expect to pay at least £300 for a proper analysis and report or proposal of any website prior to any SEO campaign of course if you except their contract this should then be taken off the total contract cost.

Why is natural link building so hard?

You hear so much about having to use natural link building to get good quality links so why is it so hard to do and how do I do it? Natural link building is basically getting links naturally from various sources such as blogs, websites, directories and social book marking websites. Why it is so hard to build links naturally is that you have to have some really great content on your website to attract others to link to you.

Now, when it comes to e commerce websites getting great content can be one of the hardest things to do, how do you make your kitchen appliance website more interesting than other kitchen appliance websites? Well, one of the first things you could do is to have a survey of what are considered the best kitchen appliance products and how these rate in cost and usability. By doing this you have made your kitchen appliance website of more value than a standard e commerce website which just lists what they stock with pictures and prices. Write reviews and get your customers to write reviews don’t be afraid to publish bad reviews as this shows your honesty in allowing both good and bad reviews. By doing both these things people are much more likely to link to your page as it gives them more resources than other kitchen appliance websites.

There are many more ways to distinguish your e commerce website above other sites you just need to think about what it is you can offer to, would be consumers of your products. A really good way of getting natural links built to your website is to add a blog to the website here you can write detailed posts regarding products and services which people are far more likely to link to, if you have linked your post back to the product page on your site you now have links pointing to the post which then the Google bots can crawl through to your product page.

There are a couple of rules to remember when it comes to natural link building. The first is that webmasters are less likely to build to your home page as they your are inner pages, this is known as deep linking. Secondly, webmasters and other internet users will not usually use key terms in the anchor text of a link, so vary your links like so http://www.naturallinkbuilding.com/ and natural link building for the best results. Are you in need of an SEO expert or professional?

With so many companies and individuals offering expert and professional advice on SEO and SEM how do you choose the right company for you?

One of the first questions you should ask any expert or professional SEO and SEM firm is, “What proof do you have that you can get my website more business.” If they claim to be either expert or professional they should already have a number of clients with successful results. Take the time to speak to a couple of their clients and ask what work has been carried out and what were the result of this work? It’s also worth asking about certain aspects of how the SEO or SEM professional conducts their business, are they reliable?

Having found an SEO/SEM expert you should set certain targets with them before starting any campaign so as both you and they are clear regarding the goals of your SEO/SEM campaign. Remember any expert or professional SEO/SEM company will not set unrealistic targets. If your website is nowhere on Google/Yahoo/Bing for the entire key terms that it needs to be then don’t expect guarantees of page 1 positions on your first campaign as this is unrealistic. If you are offer these sorts of promises you should step back as the only way SEO/SEM experts can offer this is by using black hat techniques and this can get you kicked off of search engines altogether.

Any good SEO/SEM expert or professional will give you full reports which clearly show where your money has been spent and what the results of that spend have been. Cheap SEO/SEM services will not offer this as they are often based in third world countries and are not fluent in English, so are unable to communicate properly with their clients. Good SEO/SEM services can only be offered if the client is able to speak directly to a SEO/SEM expert or professional as a number of issues such as key words, content, linking need to be thrashed out before any campaign can begin.

If you are looking for expert and professional SEO/SEM services or any type of internet marketing feel free to take a look at our website www.naturallinkbuilding.co.uk or give us a call on 020 88167009

Why are links so important when getting higher positions with search engines?

When you have carried out all the content development, title tags and alt tags on your website what do you do to get higher positions on search engines? Simple answer, build quality natural links.

The reason links are so important when it comes to positions on search engines is that after looking at all the websites and seeing that all those websites have good and relevant content the only way to place one higher than the other is based on links.

Links act as votes or citations for your website each link carries with it a certain value in the algorithm of the search engines. If you have a furniture website and you get a link from a plumbing website this link has some good relevance for your furniture website as it is home related. However, a better link would be a link that comes from a furniture related website as this has even more relevancy to your website than plumbing. Both of these links are called themed links as they have a theme both specific (furniture) and not quite so specific (home related).

There are other types of links such as non-themed links which can come from a number of sources such as forums, blogs and websites. These links are non-themed because you may get links from a diving website for your furniture website. These non-themed links are seen as having little value these days with search engine rankings as all good websites are able to get quality themed links in their place.

A final note on links is that certain links from certain websites will have more value than others this is to do with the website’s page rank, number of outbound links and their back links. Usually if the website’s page rank is higher and their back links are higher these website’s links will be stronger. However, bear in mind if the website with a page rank 7 has 1000 outbound links then you are much better off with a website which only has a page rank 3 but only 50 outbound links as the links from this website will be far stronger than your page rank 7 with 1000 outbound links on it.

For further information regarding links take a look at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlink
